Route Details & Statistics

Located ~100 kms from Arusha town in Tanzania,  The national park of Lake Manyara was established in 1960 & extends over 330 sq km. The focal point of the national park is the Lake Manyara, a shallow, alkaline body of lake water at the base of the valley.  The greater part of this region belongs to the lake Manyara biosphere reserve  established in 1980.

The lake is said to have derived its name from the plant Emanyara, the plant is used by the local “Masai” people to protect its boundaries.

Lake Manyara is rich with heritage & biodiversity & the most important layover for tourists visiting the more popular Serengeti Safari Park & Ngorongoro Crater during their Tanzanian Safari Experience.

Things to do at lake manyara

  • Tourists flock every year to Lake Manyara to witness the bizzare behaviour of Lions climbing trees. It is a fairly common sight in the park
  • The park also hosts the most diverse vegetation & wildlife in the world. It is said to host almost 11 biological ecosystems at once
  • A 370m airwalk made of solid wood that can rise to a height of 18m off the ground gives all tourists a splendid view of Lake Manyara Park in all its Glory
  • Canoeing is another activity that is unique to Lake Manyara among all of Tanzania’s National Parks. Tourists take this as an opportunity to view the flock of pelicans & the pinkish hued Flamingos
  • The Maji Moto Kubwa Hot Spring located towards the western shores of Tanzania offers another unique experience to tourists
  • Lake Manyara also has the most dense population of baboons compared to any other place in the world
  • There are 2 game viewing points in Lake Manyara & many safari operators including theafricanquest provide a night-time game viewing experience to view the nocturnal creatures.

How to Get There

Lake Manyara is a mandatory layover destination to a 5 day Safari in Tanzania. A sort of a prelude to Serengiti National Park & the Ngorongoro Game Reserve.

Since it is located quite close to Arusha town, One can easily get here within a couple of hours & enjoy the aforementioned activities & stay at an African themed resort.

Tourists prefer this route as it preps them for the rest of the journey so that the remainder of their wild Tanzanian journey doesn’t catch them off-guard. A safari to Tarangire National Park is often clubbed along with a Safari to Lake Manyara

★★★★★
Most amazing experience of my life. Mathayo and Iddy do an incredible job at providing the most ideal Safari experiences for everyone. Both are very knowledgable of the land and animals and will answer any question that comes to mind. I spent a week with Iddy and Mathayo and I can not wait to come back. I am already planning my 2021 safari with them for July/August!!

If you are planning to do your vacations in Tanzania, do not think it twice and choose The African Quest company. Good accomodation, good safari car, but mostly nice, experimented and very welcoming guides!
