Selous Reserve- Intro & History
Located in the southern circuit of Tanzania, Selous takes the crown when it comes size. It spans an area that is 3-4 times the size of the Serengeti! That’s more than the entire area of Denmark!.. spread over a single Game Reserve.
Named after Fredrick Selous, a famous British conservationist, adventurer and hunter who took to exploring large parts of Southeast Africa towards the end of the 19th century, he also managed to resist an attack from the Germans in the area during the same time.
The reserve has been declared a world heritage site by the UNESCO due to the mind-boggling variety of ecosystems and the colossal proportions… we are talking about the largest wildlife reserve in Africa & possibly, theplanet.
When compared to Serengeti & Ngorongoro, the area is not a hotspot for tourists & given its gigantic proportions, you may probably see a land area during your safari that hasn’t been stepped on by any human being ever. A large portion of the area is reserved for hunting which is done in a controlled manner & the money generated from it is used to protect the game reserve and the local commuities within the area.
Attractions At Selous
Selous Reserve Safaris gives tourists a very unique safari experience, The Rufij river, that intersects the reserve also serves as a boundary that restricts tourists from accessing remote areas in the reserve.
Given the size of the area, it is no surprise that the Selous boasts the largest variety of biodiversity in Africa. It hosts the largest populations of …okay here goes… Elephants, black Rhinocerous, Cheetahs, Hippopotamus, largest variety of birds, Nile crocodiles. The Rufiji river boasts a large variety of crusteceans the endagered dugong, otters & many more than what this paragraph can handle. It is a wildlife enthusiasts’ dream.
Protected & restricted hunting is also allowed for tourists in the northern side of the reserve.
The walking safari in Selous is the best in Africa, walking between animals in a reserve that is greater than the entire size of Switzerland is a truly liberating experience for all the tourists that we have taken to Selous.
The boating Safari that takes the tourists through the Rufiji & Tagala river is also a rare experience where tourists can come extremely close to seeing Nile crocodiles patiently wait & attack unsuspecting preys.
Our customers have reported that the entire tour is similar to being in one large Madagascar movie.
Itinerary & Logisticcs
Given the remoteness & non-commercial nature of the park, getting to Selous Game Reserve is a bit tricky. Landing at Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es salaam followed by a scenic road trip through the picturesque Ulugulu mountains is a splendid experience. Travelling through the Mikumi National Park & the Matambwe gate is also another excellent bi-product of choosing Selous Game reserve for your safari destination.
Passing through the Morogoro town that has been largely unscathed by modern civilization is a awe-inspiring experience in itself.
The trip to Selous from Dar-es-salaam is bumpy, slightly uncomfortable & can easily take up 5 hours. Should time permit, ypu can easily stop over at Mikumi National park to split the trip evenly
Alternatively, another way to get to get to the park is through Tanzania’s railroad systems or a direct charter flight
